Focusing on the unique considerations of coatings applied to plastic substrates, NPCA/FSCT hosted a new
Advancement in Coatings Series program, “Plastic Substrates’ Coatings,” in
Chicago on June 23,
2009. Held in conjunction with NPE2009—
the International
Plastics Showcase—the
ACSeries program
considered such topics
as the impact of UV,
test methods, fluoropolymers, sol-gel, and
TPO. Thirty-two industry professionals participated in the half-day
program, which also included
registration to NPE2009.
The program began with a Plenary
Lecture by Rose A. Ryntz, IAC Group
North America, entitled “Coating Plastics: Staying Flexible.”
Among the other presentations given
were the following:
“Fluoropolymer Coatings for Plastic”
by Winn Darden and Bob Parker, AGC
Chemicals Americas
“Hybrid Barrier Films by Atmospheric Incline Plasma Deposition on
Sol-gel Coated PE-cardboard” by Juha
Nikkola, Kalle Nattinen, Juha Mannila,
and Jari Vartiainen, VTT Technical
Research Centre of Finland;
Mikko Touminen, Tampere University of Technology; and Maiju
Pykonen, Abo Akademi Laboratory of Paper Coating and Converting
“Automotive Xenon Arc Test
Methods: A Correlation Study”
by Jeffery Quill and Ronald
Roberts, Q-Lab Corporation;
Don Vesey and Rick Luxgrandt,
Chrysler LLC; and Lynn Pattison,
BASF Corporation
“Sustainable UV” by Michael Kelly,
Allied PhotoChemical
The Advancements in Coatings Series
programs are designed to provide in-depth examination of focused topics of
importance to the coatings industry. For

facturing process) emissions control
and monitoring requirements.
This program explores the basis for
these technology-forcing regulations,
provides details on compliance requirements, and offers insight on emerging
trends to facilitate organizational planning.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Understand the true definition of
VOCs and what raw materials must
be considered HAPs
• Review of all U.S. EPA requirements for VOC control pertaining
to architectural and industrial
maintenance (AIM) coatings, and
OEM products (including Control
Technique Guidelines [CTG] and
what is considered Maximum
Achievable Control Technology
[MACT])
• Be clued in on California regulatory requirements affecting paint
formulation and those from other
“non-attainment” areas
• Get advanced understanding of
required facility emission controls
for both major and minor sources
Registration
Register online for the VLC programs
at www.coatingstech.org. Only one fee
is charged per location, and discounted
rates are available for early registrants.
The “Early Bird” registration rate (per
course) is $99 for NPCA/FSCT members
and $199 for nonmembers. The regular
registration rate is $149 for members
and $249 for nonmembers. Check the
