Wood Protection Coatings, Preservatives To Post Yearly Increase in U.S.
The demand for wood protection
coatings and preservatives is expected
to increase 2.2% per year through 2013
and reach a value of $3 billion, according to the study Wood Protection Coatings & Preservatives, published by industry research firm The Freedonia Group.
A rebound in the housing market will
be a primary driver of the growth. The
residential segment is a key outlet for
wood products that utilize coatings and
preservatives. Demand will also see a
positive upswing due to a shift towards
higher value items, small increase in
pressure-treated lumber production, and
solid levels of residential repair and improvement spending. However, the
wood siding market will continue to
pose weak numbers.
In general, wood protection products
will achieve the best gains in interior
wood applications, such as flooring and
cabinets. Growth will be promoted by
the expected rebound in housing starts
and increases in residential improvement spending. According to the study,
suppliers are developing product lines
that feature a wider range of colors, improved efficiency, and enhanced durability in order to maintain wood’s prominence in interior applications.
In addition, wood coatings suppliers
are addressing the demand and requirement for “green” materials by developing more environmentally friendly
formulations.
In exterior applications, wood will
continue to suffer losses to other materials. This will result in a very difficult
market environment for wood protection coatings and preservatives suppliers,
especially as high maintenance requirements are a key factor in wood’s gradual
market losses. This is especially the case
in siding, where the use of wood-based
products continues to decline.
However, maintenance coatings demand will continue to be supported by
the large amount of existing wood-based
home exteriors and decks. As with other
sectors, a greater desire for higher value
coatings will also help boost demand.

Atlas Material Testing Technology
LLC, in partnership with the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)
and the Institute of Laser Technology
(ILOT), has received the R&D 100
Award from R&D Magazine for its work
in developing the Ultra-Accelerated
Weathering System (UAWS). The UAWS
tracks the sun while concentrating reflected sunlight on test specimens
mounted in a target area. The technology allows for very high concentrations
of UV energy without excessive heating
of test samples.
