Block Resistance of Low-VOC Acrylic Paints:
Influences of Latex Design Parameters
by Wenjun Wu, Michael Anderson, and Jeff Schneider,
Dow Coating Solutions
One of the biggest challenges for low-VOC coatings is to attain
smooth film formation, acceptable block resistance, and film
hardness simultaneously. This article investigates the influences of
some latex design parameters on block resistance of acrylic paints.
Highly Weatherable Low-VOC Fluoropolymer
Coatings for Building Restoration
by Kurt Wood, Ron Partridge, and Ravi Gupta, Arkema Inc.
Discussed are approaches to improve the adhesion of restoration
coatings based on newly developed, water-based PVDF-acrylic
hybrid dispersions. In addition, the role of surface energy and
features of new and weathered PVDF finishes on adhesion of
topcoats are investigated.

MARKET UPDATE
Microbe Management
by Cynthia Challener, JCT COATINGSTECH Contributing Writer
Increasingly strict regulations covering both coatings and biocidal
actives have placed manufacturers of antimicrobials in a difficult
position. Producers are moving away from legacy chemistries and
are developing “greener” formulations, creating growth opportunities through technology conversion. The challenge is to address
evolving performance requirements and customer expectations,
while creating eco-friendly solutions.

Alternatives to Traditional Coatings
by Cynthia Challener, JCT
COATINGSTECH Contributing Writer
In certain instances, some alternative
technologies can work better than traditional coatings. The advantages and
disadvantages of in-mold coatings, dry
paint films, and film laminates are
examined for a range of different
applications.
